Investment bank CLSA’s Chinese Tourists 2016 report says just 8% of Macau visitors plan to return, highlighting the gaming capital’s shortcomings attracting China’s burgeoning traveling class.

In January, Macau’s gaming revenue fell for the 20th straight month compared to a year earlier. But Chinese New Year and aberrantly low February 2015 revenue could mean that Macau revenue ends its losing streak this month. But one uptick doesn’t make a recovery.

The global gaming capital’s newest casino resort, Lawrence Ho’s Studio City aims to refocus Macau on the mass market with entertainment attractions and no VIP tables. So far, though, there’s limited evidence that Macau can attract visitors for amusements beyond gaming.
