Rival’s patent dispute roils Macau gaming expo

April 28, 2014

Organizers of Global Gaming Expo Asia, also known as G2E Asia, want to focus on adding value for customers. But Asia’s largest casino industry trade show is center stage in a patent dispute between exhibitors that’s been played out on the exhibition floor, featuring a major customer that also runs a rival Macau gaming show.

IBM board still does not compute

April 26, 2014

Computing behemoth IBM has renominated its entire board of directors this year, featuring 10 out of 13 candidates that have held chairman/CEO positions at publicly traded companies and two that have served as private university presidents. While they bray about increased burdens of regulation, corporate inmates continue to run the asylum and pay themselves millions of shareholder dollars for their disservice to common sense and disrespect to the true owners of the company. Corporate reform, my bottom line.

Solaire shines light on Philippine casino ambitions

April 23, 2014

The Philippines hopes a quartet of US$1 billion-plus casino resorts will put on the global gaming map. The first of these resorts, Solaire just passed its first anniversary. For Solaire and rival Resorts World Manila, 2013 results suggest revenues aren’t yet growing as fast as aspirations.

Still no friends of the earth

April 23, 2014

Another Earth Day, another year marked by climate disasters across the globe, another year without meaningful action on climate change, another year of the failed UN process on climate change droning on. No wonder Mother Nature is so angry.

Adios, Gabriel Garcia Marquez

April 18, 2014

Calling Gabriel Garcia Marquez one of the all-time best Spanish language writers is as silly as calling Babe Ruth one of the all-time best English language baseball players. Love in the Time of Cholera is the greatest love story ever told by one of the greatest story tellers ever.

Garcia Marquez’s work will enrich our world as long as there are readers. Muchas gracias, senor.

Macau March casino revenue rises 13%

April 4, 2014

March was a pretty slow month for Macau. But its casinos raked in $4.4 billion, about two-thirds of what Las Vegas casinos make in a year.
